This indispensable counselling resource provides a practical understanding of drug pharmacology and physiology, demystifying how and why psychoactive drugs produce their effects. By unpacking the risks and therapeutic applications of the most commonly used and misused drug families—depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, and psychotherapeutics—Rick Csiernik considers psychoactive drugs through a holistic, bio-psycho-social lens.
With well-updated content based on current research, Csiernik examines pressing issues within the Canadian context, including the relationships between drug use, disrupted sleep, and mental health; the effects of drugs on pregnancy; and the rise of opioids, fentanyl, cannabis, novel psychoactive substances, and antipsychotic medication use. Critical topics are presented in a highly accessible style that is light on jargon and heavy on evidence. Case studies, quizzes, and updated supplementary resources make this guide an essential tool for students in addictions-related programs, as well as for counsellors, educators, therapists, and social workers.
