Here’s the thing. I cannot say I am a Christian but know nothing or very little that’s accurate about the Christian Bible. It is what tells me what Christianity is all about and how to be Christian. The Bible is made up of “books” and each one has a conversation about what God, according to Christianity, wants us to know about Him. The Book of John is a Gospel, meaning it is a narrative about “Good News”. The Gospel of John describes God’s good intentions for everyone in this world and how He went about making them real. It is a fascinating Story and a joy to discover! Each of the many authors of the Books in the Bible has his or her own personal and literary characteristics. God used their special personality, skills and life circumstances as the stage from which to tell His Story. It is God Who gave them the words to write. He is the Source of the Gospel of John the Evangelist as well. John is an evangelist because he preaches or teaches about the “Good News” from God. The Gospels were written more than 2000 years ago and in ancient Greek, which sometimes makes the text hard to follow or confusing to present-day readers. This is why we have different versions of the Bible. In each of them modern scholars try to put the Stories in a form that they believe conveys the same meaning as the original writers intended. It is sometimes also necessary to explain aspects of a Gospel message, for example, to help the committed or curious individual better grasp its full meaning in today’s language. This is basically the purpose of this Commentary or any other Commentary on the various Books of the Bible. I hope that once you grasp John’s message you will experience the joy of going home.
