What dugouts there are, are flooded with mud and water up to the knees and the rats hold swimming galas in them...We are literally caked with brown mud and it is in all our food, tea etc.'

A former print and television journalist, Jacqueline Wadsworth is now a freelance writer specialising in family, local and social history. Her first book, Bristol in the Great War will be published by Pen and Sword in August 2014.
