These are the letters of 20 year old Len Jones to his mentor and would-be partner Mona Lovell. The letters begin with his principled stand as a conscientious objector and describe life in forestry and other occupations during the Second World War. Like a number of COs, he eventually took a more active role in the fight against fascism by becoming a non-arms bearing medic. It was in Haifa that, much to Mona’s dismay, he met and married Judith Grossman, with whom he returned to Britain to set up as an artist, now known as Jonah Jones. Jones records in his own words not just the story of his early life as it happened, as he changed from gauche Len Jones to artist Jonah Jones, but also the story of the Home Front, of conscientious objection, and of the tensions in Palestine, which resonate still today.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Jonah Jones (1919-2004) was an influential sculptor, painter, writer, engraver, letter cutter, stained glass artist and educator noted for the integrity of his work. Although born in the North East he adopted Wales and its culture as his post-war home. A friend of Clough Williams-Ellis, Bertrand Russell, and John Cowper Powys, his work was collected internationally Peter Jones was born in 1952 in Tremadog and grew up in the Criccieth and Penrhyndeudraeth areas of north Wales. During the 1970s he worked as a letter cutter in the workshop of his father, the artist Jonah Jones. He served at BBC Monitoring in Reading for 21 years as a journalist specialising in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He also worked on secondment at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Under the name of Pedr Jones, he has contributed to Radio Cymru and S4C for thirty years, commentating on the former Yugoslavia and the Middle East. Now retired he lives in Cardiff.

These letters are a fascinating and inadvertently detailed first-hand account of how Len changed. Eventually he decided on a more active role in the fight against fascism and became a non-arms bearing medic. He was parachuted into northern Europe and took part in the Ardennes and German campaigns, and in the opening of the Dachau concentration camp. After the war he was posted to Palestine, where he became involved in the issues around the establishment of Israel.
