Helen is feeling dissatisfied with her own life and impulsively decides to go to Crete to try to find out what happened to Steve. Her quest helps her to uncover truths about both her grandfather and herself, and reveals hidden aspects of the Battle of Crete.

This novel was inspired by the author's own family stories and is based on her research and visits to Crete, along with imagined events.
