In Disjecta Membra, Dermot Murphy turns uncertainty into poetry. Moving from Pandora, Antigone and Briseis through the Roman Republic and Empire to Augustine, Julian and Constantinople, the collection revisits familiar moments in classical myth, literature and history from unexpected angles. Voices usually confined to the margins move briefly to the centre; apparently settled stories become unstable again; the distinction between what happened, what was recorded and what later generations chose to believe begins to blur.
Formally assured and intellectually searching, these poems range from lyric and sonnet to dramatic monologue, fragmentation and dark humour. Yet throughout runs a single compelling question: how much of the past do we inherit, and how much do we create for ourselves?
"This captivating collection of poems by Dermot Murphy interrogates moments of classical mythology, fragments of history, and vocabulary of philosophy to focus on overlooked persons, details, and possibilities, often spotlighting social complexities and injustices."
Isabelle Torrance, Professor of Classical Reception and Director of the Centre for Irish Studies, Aarhus University
"Dermot Murphy's poems take familiar moments in classical myth, literature and history, and complicate them, filling out the details that might have existed but didn't survive and the experiences that weren't recorded."
Professor Neville Morley, University of Exeter
"Exploring how we echo and distort classical civilisation, Murphy demonstrates its ongoing vitality, rich, fecund, the fons et origo of many of our concerns and assumptions. The results are at times startling and always thought-provoking."
Paul Connolly, Writer
"An incredibly tight collection with a clear arc. The reader is well guided along the way, informed and creatively challenged. Particularly striking is Murphy's reclaiming of strength for women and the way he makes myth 'ordinary'."
Isabelle Kenyon, author and founder of Fly on the Wall Press
