This text aims to present a selection of research findings about reproductive health and infectious diseases in the Middle East. These are analyzed within the social and economic context of the Middle East and its different countries, where issues in the two fields are found to have important similarities and differences. In the field of reproductive health, this work presents the results of several studies representing women's perspectives. The factors behind the generally high levels of fertility in the region are illuminated. The varying impacts made by family planning programmes are surveyed. In the field of infectious disease, studies are presented on schistomiasis, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS and Rift Valley Fever. Aspects of the diseases are discussed from trends in incidence to political complications. In conclusion, problems of reproductive health and infectious disease in the region are seen to be more serious than generally recognized, there are significant cultural and political osbtacles in both areas. A particular need is for greater empowerment of women as both clients and providers within the health care systems.
