Tech Trending The real technology visionaries don't talk about electronic commerce, or buying and selling on the World Wide Web. They're preparing for a networked world where tech trending-professionals operate their companies from the Web. Each day we will log onto our company website and operate from its web-based work stations. The Internet will be able to read and transmit all the information required to operate within an electronic supply network. Whatever software we need to run our businesses will be downloaded from service centers based on the Web. And thanks to the evolution of wireless technology we will be able to run our businesses en route to east Afghanistan carrying only a cell phone and a laptop. Much change must take place for the dream of a networked world to become reality. Tech Trending is both a visionary book and a practical guide to preparing yourself and your company for the networked world of the not-too-distant future. Amy Zuckerman offers advice on the technology trends that are here to stay and how to organize your business to meet the demands of technology change. Most importantly, it puts you, as tech trending professionals, firmly in the driver's seat by offering help on tracking technology change, managing your business in the new world and training employees to meet technology change and technology demands.
To thrive in today's hyper-paced economy every manager from the most senior on down must become a tech trender.
Tech trenders are not merely informed about technological change, but they know how to apply technology to their business and institutional goals.
Tech trenders are innovators and strategic decision-makers, risk-takers and shrewd pragmatists who recognize that technology is not a trend, but a major force defining the global economy.
Tech Trenders know intrinsically that technology presents innumerable opportunities for those smart enough to harness its power. Technology is the path to future economic growth, to profits and the good life. Conversely, they realize that those who don't evolve with technology will be left in the dust.
Tech Trenders embrace technology. They know to do so means joining the "haves" of the world. TO ignore technology means being one of the future "have not."
Tech Trending Equals Survival
If you have any doubts about technology's influence on the global economy or whether you need to join the tech-trending club, consider these points.: "IT is all pervasive: it can boost efficiency in almost everything a firm does, from design to marketing to accounting, and in every sector of the economy... This could be the first technology revolution to boost productivity in services from health care and education to finance and government. That would be no small matter: services account for nearly three-fifths of America's GDP (gross domestic product).
Companies and institutions that refuse to evolve with technological change do so at their own risk of their survival. Xerox, a major high tech pioneer, has been flirting with bankruptcy because it stuck with its laser-based copier business rather than restructure itself to take advantage of Web technology. Other companies like Charles Schwab have been able to successfully harness the Internet - in this case creating an online securities brokerage - without disrupting their core business.
Some major organizations are considering making techno-literacy a condition of employment. If you can't work on a computer, you don't know what a basic operating system is or even work a basic word processing program you may find yourself out of work. Those of you who embrace technology as a part of your daily life still need to protect yourself in a world where the consumer is often the "betatester," meaning the place where software manufacturers work out the bugs in their products. The ability to function in this environment presupposes that you are tech aware and tech savvy enough to communicate with tech support about the glitches in your system.
This is a world where many technologies are converging and new technologies are being developed daily. At the same time vendors are bombarding managers with hype about their products. Cutting through that hype is a time consuming, sometimes maddening process, but it's something all managers must be able to do to avoid the quagmire of poor purchases and major financial losses. You want to be able to select hardware and software that supports business and institutional goals, that is flexible and able to evolve with new technologies. To do so requires some basic technology knowledge.
Becoming a tech trender for many will involve not only a change in midset, but alteration of daily work habits. In essence, tech trending is a way of life; a life-long learning process. Tech trending managers track technology change as avidly as they study the stock market or other economic indices. They build technology awareness and learning into their regular work schedule, whether that be learning about new emerging technologies, mastering a new word-processing program, or gaining hands on knowledge of networking.
Jim Harrington is your quintessential tech trender. Now in his mid-60s, Harrington in the CEO of two dot.com startups. A former consulting principal for quality at Ernst & Young with over 20 books to his credit, not to mention software products, Harrington could easily retire and spend his days fishing and golfing. But he's chosen, instead, to immerse himself in the cyberspace world. The transition from an earlier career path to online product sales hasn't been without its costs and headaches. Harrington has had to learn a great deal and in a hurry. But he finds his new life in the ever-changing technology arena to be "invigorating" and "life-giving"
For many managers and strategic decision makers, becoming a tech trender will mean starting form ground zero. There is growing evidence that many managers struggle with the IT/Knowledge Gap, meaning they lack awareness of the most basic technologies that are employed in workplaces on a daily basis. Prevalent throughout the global business and institutional worlds, the IT/Knowledge Gap affects all levels of manager and strategic decision makers.
In fact, there are many IT experts who believe the male CEO over the age of 50 is possibly the most techno-illiterate species on earth. These are men, often afflicted by what IT trainers call the "pride factor," who don't even use computers as they because typing is beneath them. Yet they are the same people being asked to sign off on their corporation's technology direction with enormous financial implications to their business, as well as to society and the global economy.
Of all the issues addressed in this book, the IT/Knowledge Gap is possibly the most serious. When a CEO hasn't a clue about the basic workings of a PC or the most common computer programs and a low-level manager is thrust into making decisions about software solutions way beyond her knowledge base, there's a serious crisis a-brewing. Many of the so-called failings of enterprise resource software (ERP) solutions could be blamed as much on lack of human knowledge as the software, itself. Techno-illiteracy, which is a contributory factor to the IT/Knowledge Gap, threatens to upturn technology's progress and even the huge spurt in global productivity that technology has spawned. It also threatens future economic growth that properly harnessed technology could promote for a number of years to come...
