It is close enough to the mainland that you can see it on a clear day, yet the moment the ferry pulls away it somehow acquires the air of a proper expedition. Never underestimate the psychological power of twenty-odd minutes at sea. By the time you?ve disembarked, you?ve convinced yourself you?re practically an explorer. This handy Landmark Visitors Guide by Jackie and Chris Parry is the sort of travelling companion that existed before smartphones confidently directed you into farmyards and insisted they were luxury hotels. Back in 2006, sensible travellers packed an actual guidebook, folded maps that refused to fold back properly, and perhaps a packet of mints for the ferry crossing if the Solent decided to become enthusiastic.
