...A lavish 300-page tale of adventure and derring-do on and in the deep blue seas (and the follow-up to last year's equally bounteous Polar Portraits)...a truly magnificent book. --Sport magazine, September 2010

a luminously produced new book called Face to Face: Ocean Portraits...sketches the outline of a discrete global community, a community separated by space and time, perhaps, but one bound together nevertheless by its members' shared passion for the sea. --Outdoor Photography magazine, December 2010
..a collection of historic portraiture alongside contemporary photography, the images commemorate those who repeatwdly brave the elements - from naval veterans and lifeboat crews to deep-sea divers. A very attractive, beguiling but eccentric book, it s a classic coffee table work that is still a very interesting and informative read. Most unusual. Beautifully produced in the usual Conway Maritime manner, the book benefits from a well-educated and cultured author/editor. It also includes the work of some of the world s best marine photographers. Essentially, following an introduction describing the history of marine photography, it comprises a large number of photographic vignettes of marine celebrities , both contemporary and historic. Obviously, the selection of such a long list of celebrities could be the subject of considerable argument. There is no doubt that some will be long forgotten in a decade or two. They are also, probably, rather too north Atlantic centric. Nevertheless, they are mostly interesting and that, surely, is the point. Beautifully photographed, magnificently presented and crisply written. Quality throughout! --Baird Maritime, March 2011

Reseña del editor:
A lavish collection of spectacular photography above and below the ocean waves, this book is a stunning visual celebration of the explorers and scientists, naval officers and yachtsmen, fishermen and divers, who have harnessed, surveyed and investigated the great oceans of the world and in so doing have broadened the horizons of our understanding. Atmospheric black-and-white prints from the finest maritime collections and leading photographers such as Annie Leibovitz appear alongside modern imagery by leading marine photographers Rick Tomlinson and Nigel Millard. Completely international in its scope, some of the famous names to appear include Robert FitzRoy, Jacques Cousteau, Robert D Ballard, Wilfried Erdman, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Sarah Campbell and Ben Ainslie.
