Volume IV of Chinese in Steps is the second book of the Lower Intermediate stage and it is recommended for those who have completed Volume III. This volume is designed to review major speech patterns covered so far and to use the language in scenarios that readers are most likely to encounter in China or a Chinese speaking environment. Like the three previous volumes, this book also contain 10 lessons, but with certain changes to reflect the transition necessary before moving to the next level of study, for example there are no speech patterns or character stroke order exercises. Each lesson still has two dialogues and a reading passage usually set in a everyday life scenario but with a more extended vocabulary. The relevant language usages - particularly on the structure of Chinese vocabulary are explained in the notes on grammar and the exercises. Cultural notes still remain, but now an additional reading is included at the end of each lesson introducing a common Chinese proverb and its story. Chinese language learners can expect to encounter many of such proverbs as they continue with their study.
