Buchbeschreibung Australian ed. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), pages lightly toned, minor edgewear jacket (tiny tear bottom corner), front cover corner tip creased. 311 pp. Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes provide a devastating reckoning of the true cost of the Iraq war - quite apart from the tragic human toll - estimated by the Bush administration at $50 billion, but which underestimates the real figure up to 60 times. Exposes the gigantic expenses that have not been accounted for, including replacing military equipment (being degraded at six times the peacetime rate), but also the cost of lifetime caring for thousands of wounded veterans. Shifting to a global perspective, they investigate the cost in lives and damage within Iraq and the Middle East generally. With chilling precision, they calculate what the money spent on the war could have produced had it been further invested in economic growth and infrastructure building. Australian edition.
