The study of animal behaviour is a dynamic and vibrant field in contemporary psychology schools which has seen rapid growth and diversification throughout the last century. It forms a major area of study and research not only in cognitive, experimental and behavioural psychology, but also in neurobiology, evolutionary biology and evolutionary psychology. In this timely and comprehensive four-volume collection, two internationally renowned scholars bring together every seminal paper of the last century, from the canonical to the critical and contemporary.
Conceptually arranged to address the four formative questions posed by Niko Tinbergen in 1963, Volume One addresses causation and the mechanisms of animal behaviour; Volume Two presents the foremost research in the development of animal behaviour; Volume Three covers behavioural ecology and the function of animal behaviour, and Volume Four addresses research that attempts to reconstruct the evolutionary history of behaviour.

Johan J. Bolhuis is Professor of Behavioural Biology at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. His main research interests are in the behavioural, neural and cognitive mechanisms of learning, memory and development. Previously, he has worked on imprinting and the development of filial preferences in the domestic chick. His current research is focused on the mechanisms of song learning in zebra finches. In addition, he has a theoretical interest in the relationship between evolution, cognition, and the brain. He is editor of three books on behavioural development and cognitive neuroscience, and author of numerous papers on these issues. Together with Luc-Alain Giraldeau he is editor of the university textbook The Behavior of Animals.
Luc-Alain Giraldeau is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Québec at Montréal. His main research interests concern social foraging behaviour, especially in birds. Specifically, he is interested in the factors that promote the use of social information; copying and the exploitation of resources discovered others. Previously he has worked on optimal foraging and central place foraging of chipmunks and social learning in pigeons. His current research focuses on evolutionary game theory and the evolution of behavioural rules for playing these strategic games. He edited three textbooks including Behavioural Ecology and together with Johan J Bolhuis The behaviour of Animals.
