This is the definitive textbook on the widely used vacuum extraction technique for operative vaginal delivery in obstetric practice. It is written by two of America's foremost obstetricians, Drs. John Patrick O'Grady and Martin L. Gimovsky, in collaboration with Doctor of Jurisprudence Cyril J. McIlhargie, who state in their preface:
"Vacuum extraction has become an increasingly popular delivery technique. . . . Despite the similarities between vacuum extraction and forceps operations, skill in the use of forceps does not guarantee similar expertise in vacuum extraction. Specialized training is essential. . . . Most residency education and continuing medical education programs do not prepare students adequately . . .
"For these reasons, we believe there is a need for new educational materials concerning all aspects of instrumental delivery including vacuum extraction. This has led us to prepare this clinically oriented monograph, including what we believe to be reasonable and appropriate guidelines for vacuum extraction delivery in American obstetric practice. . . . the text includes a discussion of the risks and benefits of instrumental vaginal delivery and a brief review of pertinent legal issues. We trust that this book will assist clinicians in developing their skills in vacuum-assisted delivery and will contribute to the improvement of obstetric care."
