Brother Lawrence, a 17th century uneducated man from a peasant background, reveals in this book how his simple practices gave him a consciousness of the presence of God that helped him in carrying out the most mundane tasks of life. In his youth he served as a soldier and afterwards as a footman in a wealthy French family. When he was between 50 and 60 years old, he entered the Carmelite Order.
