A personal friend of Franz Marc and of Kandinsky during the Blaue Reiter period Klee then spent ten years as a teacher at the heart of that most audacious undertaking to redefine artistic pedagogy, the Bauhaus. Here he developed a concept of creation for his students, founded on an analogy between the generation of the world and that of the work itself, an analogy rooted in a cultural base which is fundamentally romantic. Forced out of Germany by the Nazis, he spent the rest of his life exiled in Bern, tirelessly pursuing his creative work and beliefs.
