Francis Ernest Jackson is unquestionably a neglected talent. Born in Huddersfield in 1872, he received his first training in Yorkshire but moved to Paris in about 1893 where he was given a solid training in figure drawing by the best masters. He knew Monet and became briefly interested in Art Nouveau but he was most lastingly influenced by the revival of lithography as a medium for artistic work. In 1910, he was one of the founding members of the Senefelder Club which was responsible for reviving interest in the medium and was soon appointed to oversee the design of all posters for the London Underground. He was also a fluent painter. The technique of tempera particularly suited his talent for fine drawing and appealed to his interest in experiment. In 1921, as professor of drawing at the Royal Academy Schools he was unsurpassed among his English contemporaries as a teacher of life drawing. His pupils included Peter Greenham, Brian Thomas, Joan Hassall, Charles Stewart and George Warner Allen. This book looks at his life and work, detailing such pioneering lithographs as "The Buccaneer" and "The Velvet Dress" which established Jackson as the leading artistic lithographer of the early 20th century.
