Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) is universally recognized as one of the principle founders of 20th-century Abstract art. This important break with the past was the result of a long reflection on the Western, and particularly the Dutch, pictorial tradition, and of years of artistic asceticism marked by some singular paintings. After his experiments with Cubism, Mondrian founded Neo-Plasticism, formulating the principles that were to establish a highly personal style: a flat construction with right-angles, which enabled him to develop an oeuvre of surprising richness and diversity. This monograph looks at the career and output of this artist.
