Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> Style and technique are essential components of this book and the accompanying exhibition. But there is a further intention: to look beyond these questions to matters of choice: how were decisions on framing made by artist, archi- tect, patron or framemaker? The sparsity of information here is not just a matter of the lack of published sources although this is a problem. It is that so little was ever recorded in the first place. As one correspondent told the author when writ- ing of her father's portrait by William Coldstream, I remember when Bill Coldstream painted my father they were discussing the framing endlessly but there is nothing in writing, not even a label on the frame'. The lack of avail- able documentation makes the study of frames more difficult. So little has been published that the researcher is obliged to undertake an inordinate amount of archival work.
