'Self Portrait' is een ambitieus boek over het zelfportret vanaf de oorsprong in de vroege vijftiende eeuw tot aan het begin van de 21ste eeuw. Het maakt ons deelgenoot van een intieme ontmoeting met de grootste kunstenaars uit het verleden. Eens stond de schilder voor zijn doek en tuurde in de spiegel; nu staan wij voor het schilderij en zien wat de kunstenaar in die spiegel zag. Op dat moment reizen we heel even terug in de tijd, en kijken we de kunstenaar recht in zijn ogen.
Naast 140 reproducties van schilderijen uit internationale collecties,waaronder Van Eyck en Chuck Close, bevat dit boek vernieuwende essays over het zelfportret door vooraanstaande kunsthistorici en informatieve beschrijvingen van bijna zestig belangrijke werken. De kunstenaars worden getoond in de (re-)constructie van hun eigen identiteit, hun leven en hun tijd, maar bovenal als creatieve individuen, gevangen in het moment waarop zij hun eigen beeltenis oproepen in de studio. Met essays van T.J. Clark, Ludmilla Jordanova en Joseph Leo Koerner.
Self Portrait verscheen naar aanleiding van een tentoonstelling in de National Portrait Gallery in Londen, van 20 oktober 2005 tot 29 januari 2006, en in de Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australië, van 17 februari tot 14 mei 2006.
