The author of Gulliver's Travels, the greatest Irish philosopher, a major-general at Waterloo, a famous Dublin surgeon, an Archbishop of York, an Oscar-winning expert on sound recording and a pioneering pharmacologist... they all have in common a formative education in Kilkenny College. The book examines the early illustrious history of Kilkenny College, when it educated the sons of Ireland's most important families and produced men who became the leaders of Irish society. It traces the College's many difficulties during the 19th and 20th centuries prior to the moulding of the large, vibrant co-educational school of today. The authors also trace the history of two very different schools the Pococke School, Kilkenny and the Collegiate School, Celbridge which, through amalgamation, have contributed to the growth of the modern school. A remarkable picture emerges of the pleasures and pains, distinctions and disasters, friends and foes that constituted school life for generation after generation.
Andrew Whiteside, author of the history of Borough School, Swords (1999), is the archivist of Kilkenny College. Lesley Whiteside has written extensively on aspects of Irish history, ranging from education to stained glass. Her books include A History of The King's Hospital (1975) and George Otto Simms: a biography (1990).
