`Overall this is a very good book that provides up-to-date assessments of Europe and the world-economy from early plunder of the Americas to EU negotiations in the WTO.' -- Peter J. Taylor, Progress in Human Geography `Europe in the International Economy 1500 to 2000 is a collective tour de force. All six chapters are excellent; but the core of the book is the 19th century and the two chapters covering this period by Pollard and Foreman-Peck are the creme de la creme. . . Aldcroft and Sutcliffe have produced a stunning book. One that should be on the shelf of everyone interested in economic history and Europe's role in the world.' -- Stuart Jones, South African Journal of Economic History `From the start it should be said that this book of 280 pages is convincing, indeed very convincing. Europe in the International Economy 1500 to 2000 will prove to be an authoritative text which will be of major use to all students of this subject. This is not primarily business history but it is a very compelling book, a good and objective study which gives a complete overview on European economic development and its position in the world from which business historians will benefit. Clearly written and well documented with bibliographies for each chapter it makes a good, digestible and appetising starter and it is a good read.' -- Monika Dickhaus, Business History `. . . this book can be useful as a comprehensive textbook on European economic history since it surveys, over a limited number of pages, such an extended period.' -- Karl Gunnar Persson, Eh.Net `This will surely prove to be the definitive account - an authoritative text by six leading authors. Well integrated, clearly written, objective and balanced in judgment, excellently documented with key bibliographies - the answer to the needs of all students of the subject.' -- Peter Mathias, Downing College, Cambridge, UK
This thorough and compelling book offers a long-run perspective on the European economy from 1500 to the present day, and compares Europe's position of world dominance in the nineteenth century with its vacillating fortunes in the twentieth century. Europe is set specifically within an international context to illustrate how it influenced the rest of the world and how in turn the latter helped to shape the pattern of European development. The authors explain why Europe overtook the formerly advanced Eastern civilizations and how this resulted in the growing inequality among the nations of the world which is such a marked feature in the present day. They then trace the development of the European economy within the context of the international economy and analyse the reasons for its rise to world dominance in the nineteenth century and then its collapse and revival in the twentieth century. Europe in the International Economy 1500 to 2000 will be of interest to students and scholars of economic history and international economics.
