On 21 July 2013 Mama Irene passed away surrounded by her family in Sydney, Australia. Although there was much sadness with this news, Irene left a wonderful legacy,helping many thousands of children to receive food,education, healthcare, vocational training and spiritual nourishment. To the people of Kitgum, Uganda she was a hero who brought love to war-affected children, hope to the hopeless, and help to those who needed to rebuild their future. This is her story.

IRENE GLEESON (30 December 1944 - 21 July 2013) was a Christian missionary to the children of Kitgum District, northern Uganda. She was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2010 for service to international relations, particularly through sustained aid for children affected by war and HIV-AIDS in Northern Uganda. NICOLE PARTRIDGE is a freelance journalist and ghost-writer whose feature stories have been published in newspapers and magazines in Australia,USA, UK and New Zealand.
