Each one, under its subject's name, follows a man who left his native country and in old age could not make peace with his past. The narrator knew each of them: Dr. Selwyn, from whom he rented a house in East Anglia; Paul Bereyter, his primary school teacher; his great-uncle Ambros Adelwarth, who went to America; and Max Ferber, a painter he met as a research student in Manchester. Ferber's story includes his mother's memoir of Jewish life in Germany as the Nazi persecution grew. The narrator follows their routes through England, Germany, Switzerland, New York and Jerusalem, gathering diaries, documents and black-and-white photographs, which appear throughout the text. The book mixes biography, travel writing and memoir, and it leaves the line between fact and fiction unclear. Its central subjects are memory, displacement, and the long reach of the Holocaust into the lives of people who escaped it. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers OA-shelf-32-024
