Edward Said experienced both British and American imperialism as the old Arab order crumbled in the late 1940s and early 1950s. This account of his early life reveals how it influenced his books Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism. Edward Said was born in Jerusalem and brought up in Cairo, spending every summer in the Lebanese mountain village of Dhour el Shweir, until he was 'banished' to America in 1951. This work is a mixture of emotional archaeology and memory, exploring an essentially irrecoverable past. As ill health sets him thinking about endings, Edward Said returns to his beginnings in this personal memoir of his ferociously demanding 'Victorian' father and his adored, inspiring, yet ambivalent mother.
Edward Said (1935-2003) was one of the world's most influential literary and cultural critics. Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, he was the author of twenty-two books, including Orientalism, Culture and Imperialism and Beginnings. He was also a music critic, opera scholar, pianist and the most eloquent spokesman for the Palestinian cause in the West.

Softcover. Zustand: Good. Born in Jerusalem in 1935, Edward Said spent much of his youth in Cairo and Lebanon. Out of Place is an act of emotional archaeology of that time, bringing to life people and places many of which no longer exist. In this unstintingly candid memoir - dominated by his ferociously demanding Victorian father and his adored, inspiring yet ambivalent mother - Said traces his growing sense of himself as an outsider: Arab but Christian, Palestinian but the holder of a US Passport, having an improbably British first name yoked to an Arabic surname. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Edward W. Said, author of the ground-breaking Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism, was born in 1935 in a country which no longer exists - Palestine. His memoir of growing up between nations, cultures and two extraordinary parents is now available in paperback. 'An intensely moving act of reclamation and understanding . . . To read it is to come to know his family and his younger self as closely as we know characters in literature, and to be shown, intimately and unforgettably, what it has meant in the last half-century to be a Palestinian.' SALMAN RUSHDIE 'I know I shall not read a work to match this one this year, or for many years.' NADINE GORDIMER 'Vividly portrayed in this work is Edward Said's path to self-realization, making him one of this fin-de-siecle's most indispensable intellectuals.' KENZABURO OE 'A major work of art: the great literary statement at which his previous books had only hinted.' Independent 'A fascinating book written by a gifted, brave man.' Sunday Telegraph 'Fine and beautifully written . . . a Palestinian Proust.' Independent on Sunday A profoundly moving and candid memoir about being a Palestinian in exile, from one of the most important writers and thinkers of the twentieth century.
