A contemporary of Anne Frank, Ruth David (née Oppenheimer) counts herself as one of the incredibly fortunate ones, for she survived. A child in a large German Jewish family in the 1930s, Ruth and her family experienced oppression and persecution at the hands of the Nazi regime before she was chosen as one of 9000+ Jewish children to take part in the Kindertransport scheme, which provided those children with relative safety in the UK. In "A Child of Our Time" Ruth relates her memories of life as a Jewish child in Nazi Germany and, later, as a child refugee in the North of England during the war. The book concludes with a description of a reunion of the girls from Ruth's refugee hostel almost 50 years later. Ruth remained in England until 1992 when she emigrated to the USA, returning to England in 2009 to be nearer her children and grandchildren. She lives in Leicester and visits Germany frequently.
