Their morphology, reproduction and behaviour set them apart from all others, and their ability not only to dig insects and their grubs out of holes in trees or in the ground but also to excavate their own nest holes in trees gives them a distinct advantage over other birds. They inhabit most parts of the world, apart from the Australasian region, the Antarctic and the northern treeless parts of the Arctic, and are found not only in woodland and forest but also in desert areas, grasslands and even on rocky mountain slopes. Besides their well-known drumming (though not all species drum), woodpeckers are characterised by their often striking colours. Their plumages show contrasting black and white, greens, brilliant yellows, bright reds and rich browns, and an amaz-ing variety of patterns can be found within the members of the family.
