This is the story of a spirited and courageous woman who was driven by a concern for the welfare of ordinary people. Written by her daughter, it has a liveliness and immediacy which would be difficult for an outsider to achieve.
Connie Birchfield grew up in Lancashire - working in a cotton mill from the age of thirteen - and emigrated to New Zealand in the 1920s. She became involved in unions and the Labour Party as a hotel worker, and joined the Communist Party as an unemployed worker in the 1930s. In many ways she was a woman ahead of her time - a fine street orator, a candidate in several municipal and general elections, an activist in the working women's movement - much of this while bringing up a family with a husband away at war. Her local community benefited from her organising ability and she always spoke her mind - so much so that she was expelled from the Communist Party in 1957.

Soft Covers. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. Photos (illustrator). 1st. Connie Birchfield was one of the first and most prominant women involved early in the trade union movement and kindred political organisations in NZ. The book's title represents the attitude that was taken then of women having a say in such affairs. Nevertheless, she was determined to do all she could to advance the welfare and rights of the the "working class." She did this through street oratory, as a trade union official. member of the Communist Party at the time of the Great Depression and the Labour Party. If she felt the need, she would criticise organisations she belonged, with the result that she was thrown out of the Communist Party in the late 1950's. This is the well told and informative biography of a remarkable, strong and willing activist and, although written by her daughter Maureen, it is thoroughly objective. Connie was born in England in July 1898 and died at Wellington in May 1994, she had emmigrated to NZ in the 1920s. First edition of 1998, 215 pages including five appendices, notes and index, 36 b/w photos, several documents. Pictorial card covers VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions, few pencil margin marks or brief underlining. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 004089
