'Occam's razor' is a philosophical and scientific tool for trimming away unnecessary assumptions. Named for William of Occam, 14th century scholar, who thought it unnecessary to multiply beliefs, this principle, so radical in its time and truly still so in ours, enabled the shaving away of mentally-created complications in philosophy and, presumably, thinking in general. On the other hand, to live without mentally creating complications is rather more difficult than merely to understand the laws of evidence.

the illustrations for walkin' occam's razor are intended to establish a moving line of reference, as in musical notation. a visual counterpoint to the words and their meaning rather than fixed reference points. the making of this book was in two stages. in the first I familiarized myself with the poems, finding the rhythms, extracting the mood, extrapolating the form. the symbolism is abstracted from the meeting of the elements of nature and machine. the second stage involved realizing these elements into an organic visual form, first in terms of rhythm and space and then, more gradually, the details of symbolism. the visual scroll is an audio visual reference, a sound code t accompany the voice. the rhythms and pulse are implied in the periodic frequency of the illustrations, the melody by the silhouette. the circle and its subdivisions indicate themes and their variation. the elements of nature and machine represent two voices in various aspects of relationship to each other.
