Tony Kozol, itinerant Austin, Texas, rhythm guitarist, is in Brazil playing backup for Luis Angel, the latest Latin heartthrob. Tony's best pal, bass player Rock, arranged the gig, convinced that it would do Tony good to get away from the publicity associated with the murderous doings on Tony's last job. So far, so good. The hotel in Ipanema is first class, Luis Angel's womanizing doesn't leave much time for rehearsals, and Tony has fallen in love with Silvia, a Brazilian beauty. Then he gets sucked into a relationship with a mysterious man named Yairi, is forced to contend with Silvia's protective uncle, and eventually finds himself immersed in Ipanema's machete-waving criminal underworld, which lurks just under the city's festive, tourist-friendly surface. The fourth Kozol mystery is a mild disappointment, in that the musical backdrop, which provides much of the series' energy, is largely missing this time, and the exotic setting is an inadequate substitute. Still, it's an entertaining enough outing, and Tony and Rock remain an engagingly laid-back sleuthing duo. Wes Lukowsky

In The Body from Ipanema: A Tony Kozol Mystery, fourth in J.R. Ripley's (Lost in Austin) series, sleuthing guitarist Tony accompanies a Latin pop star at Rio de Janeiro's Carnaval. Tony and his bassist pal Rock are seduced by Brazil's bathing beauties, music and nightlife, but not so much that they won't try to nail a rich and powerful man for murdering a young woman.
