Best-known for his Structuralist reliefs, the American-born Canadian painter has an active practice going back nearly five decades. Bornstein's early work was based on nature, later incorporating abstract and Cubist techniques. Over the course of his career, Bornstein's works have progressed in complexity and the reliefs exhibit subtle shifts in color under changing light conditions. This monograph contextualizes a singular ongoing practice in relation to both early Modernist movements and the current revival of perceptual and experiential art, while also calling attention to Bornstein's achievement as editor and publisher of Canada's longest-running art journal, The Structurist (1960-2010).
