Aldfrith ruled the Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria for almost twenty years from 685 to 704CE at a time of great political, social and religious turbulence in the North of England. His uniqueness stems mainly from the fact that until his accession to the throne he had been a Christian scholar / priest trained in the Irish tradition, having lived for some time as a monk on the Hebridean island of lona. He made peace with the Picts in the North and with the Irish Ui Neill to the West. He was a patron of the arts and a writer of poetry; during his long reign, work on the famous Lindisfarne Gospels was begun. His often stormy relationship with Wilfrid, (the Bishop who at the Synod of Whitby, 664CE was responsible for introducing Roman practices to Northumbria) is explored; Aldfrith helped to ensure that the Irish / Celtic tradition brought by Aidan from lona continued to be influential in the region long after his death. This book attempts to tell the story of his reign in fictional form, yet drawing on both primary and secondary historical sources. David Adartt writes: Passion and Power gave me great pleasure and the opportunity to look at some of the shapers of the nation who have been somewhat neglected. Warren Bardsley is a retired minister of the Methodist Church living in Lichfield. He has studied Celtic Christianity at the University of Wales (Lampeter) and is a member of the lona Community.
