Escape from reality comes in patent-leather Prada kneeboots
Dawn Ellis needs to escape from her painfully dull existence. Her unemployed husband spends all day complaining about life, moping around, or fixing lawnmowers on her kitchen table. The local writing class proves to be an adequate distraction with its eccentric collection of wannabe authors and, of course, the enigmatic Jason, who soon shows a romantic interest in her.
Dawn pours her inner frustrations into her first novel about the extraordinary exploits of Cinnamon Knight, an avenging angel -- a woman who doesn't believe in following the rules. Cinnamon is ruthless and wanton, inflicting suffering on any man who warrants it. Little does Dawn realise that soon the line between reality and fiction will blur. Her own life will be transformed, and those close to her will pay the price. Find out what happens in Just Add Spice by best-selling author Carol E Wyer.

After completing a degree in French and English at Keele University, Carol Wyer became a language teacher in Casablanca, Morocco. She ran the EFL department at a private UK school (a non-magical Hogwarts), set up Language 2000 Ltd, teaching a variety of languages, including basic Japanese, and translated documents. Recurring medical problems forced her to give up teaching and become a fitness instructor. Thanks to older age, she now writes novels, articles and books that poke fun at getting older. Known for her light-hearted take on life, Carol has written two award-winning novels and now also tours giving talks on how to age disgracefully.
Dawn breathed in the scent of wood and polish. She pushed open the door to the Wood Library and, apologising for her lateness, took up her place on a chair towards the back of the room, notebook in hand. She could hear the sounds of the market taking place outside. Muffled cries from vendors combined with the mellifluous tones of her tutor, Blake, soon relaxed her.
She took a few minutes to gaze at her fellow writers. She was always too busy taking notes, or hanging onto every syllable from Blake, to actually pay any attention to the others. Next to her, wearing a stylish turban, Turkish-style trousers and a dark maroon silk scarf over a lighter maroon silk blouse, sat Geraldine. She looked like an extra from an Agatha Christie drama. Elegant, with immaculately groomed nails and expertly applied make-up, Geraldine oozed class. Dawn suspected she was a widow and had been married to someone rather wealthy. Geraldine wasn't ostentatious and only someone who knew a lot about fashion and jewellery would have recognised that Geraldine sported a £15,000 Jaegar-LeCoultre watch under the cuff of her blouse and carried a Marc Jacobs purple Carolyn Crocodile handbag, costing approximately £18,500.
Her dress sense may have been tremendous, but the confident air that should have accompanied it was absent. Geraldine scurried rather than walked, and she appeared to be very nervous. At the first meeting, she was most anxious to explain she was having trouble with writer's block. She had come along to the group to see if it would help kick-start her writing again. At each session, they were given a writing task to complete as homework. Geraldine reminded them all before they left not to expect her to hand in any homework. She was, after all, just there to shake up her writing muse.
Seated right in front of Blake Ryder was Dotty. Her real name was Dorothy Fields; however, she insisted everyone call her Dotty, and not Dot. Dot reminded her of a character in Eastenders. As it happened, she was the complete opposite of that character, Dot Cotton. They may both have been a similar age, but Dotty had rosy cheeks, curly ginger hair and was three times the size. She looked like a friendly farmer's wife. It transpired she used to be a dinner lady at the local school. She had been retired for a year and was ready for a new challenge. She hoped to write a book with recipes in it. Not an ordinary cookery book, but one that had a story woven around the recipes. She brought in freshly baked cakes every meeting. Dawn's stomach gave a quiet rumble making her wonder idly what would be on offer today.
Blake was talking about the importance of being grammatically accurate. She put aside her thoughts to listen to the subject but was immediately distracted again. Jason, an attractive man in his late thirties arrived. He tapped lightly on the door, mouthed 'sorry' at Blake, and settled next to Dawn. She looked up to give him a smile and was surprised to find her stomach did a little flip. His deep chestnut hair had fallen over one dark hazel-coloured eye. That day, he had a fashionable amount of chin stubble which suited him well. His white t-shirt accentuated his muscled chest. He smelt of citrus and spice. He looked delicious—yes, delicious, that was the word. Feeling a warmth creep up her face, she pulled her gaze away.
Jason was one of those men you couldn't help staring at. He was just gorgeous. The first time they had all met Jason was sitting next to the youngest member of the group, Paige Willett. Paige had an arresting cleavage and eyelashes like tiny black fans. They were the longest eyelashes Dawn had ever seen, and framed Paige's azure blue eyes perfectly. No red-blooded man could have resisted shooting lustful looks at Paige. Even the oldest male in the group, Harold, was drawn to her magnificent chest on several occasions. Paige didn't mind. She thrust her assets out, sat with a straight back and a coquettish look on her face. Blake spent the first half an hour of that class talking to Paige's breasts before reluctantly dragging his gaze away to include the members of the class. Only Jason failed to notice Paige. Even when she sucked the end of pencil repeatedly, with plump red lips, making Harold almost drop his notepad. Jason, however, didn't seem to pick up on her sensuality. Unlike everyone else in the room, including Dawn, who wished she looked half as good as Paige. In fact, Jason seemed to be more focussed on Blake or Colin, who had a lot to say about libraries at that meeting, leading Dawn to conclude he might be gay.
Jason nodded at Dawn. She was staring at him again. She smiled back. Oh Lord, now he would think she was flirting. She dragged herself back to the conversation. Geraldine was complaining bitterly about the abuse of the apostrophe. She was fed up with seeing signs advertising goods or products with apostrophes in the wrong place. She declared she always wanted to scrawl on such signs with a large red marker pen. Colin nodded in agreement. Harold shouted "Hear, hear!" Blake took back control, nodding in agreement. He told the group he was going to give them all a grammar test, to make sure they were capable of writing accurately and to help give them pointers if they made mistakes. He then threw a glance at Dotty, who took her cue and announced that she would get some tea and cake ready to help fuel the brain cells for the test.
Jason leaned into Dawn. She caught the heady smell of his aftershave.
"Just like being back at school," he chuckled. Dawn sniggered.
"I wonder if we get to mark it ourselves or have to hand it into Sir," she replied.
"I'll do yours, if you do mine," said Jason.
"Deal, but be nice to me."
"I think we'll be able to come to some reciprocal agreement," he whispered.
Dawn felt a flush creep up her neck. She hoped he was gay or she might have been tempted to read more into that statement.
