He was tasked with stopping a flood of porn films, including the notorious Deep Throat. He discovered that a fledgling company called Virgin was engaged in tax fraud - and arrested its personable and chastened young boss, Richard Branson. And he journeyed to Warrenpoint, in Northern Ireland, to probe the IRA's involvement in grain smuggling, at a time when outrages there killed Lord Mountbatten and 18 British soldiers.
