Inhaltsangabe

Originally conceived as a record of the rich field archaeology within the Kentmere valley, Kentmere Notes grew to cover a wide range of related material as time went by. From an archaeological point of view, Kentmere has three principal coherent landscapes, Late Iron Age, Early Medieval at Bryants’ Gill and probably High Medieval (up until the Black Death). The survival of these landscapes is due to the system of land management introduced by the absentee Norman Lords of the Manor, which engendered the use of common land, inbye and on the fell. We are fortunate to have an early description of how this was organised. Evidence from before the Late Iron Age is difficult to attribute confidently, but may well be there – as evidenced in neighbouring Troutbeck, Patterdale and Longsleddale. There is a mild diversion into the history of Needfires, which seem to date back to the fire rituals of Celtic times, but were still prevalent in Cumbria until Victorian times (if you don’t count Tony Blair). We also digress into a look at the recent Genetic studies from the UK and Ireland, which throw considerable light onto Cumbrian history and its inhabitants. Finally I pay tribute to Thomas Hay (1873 – 1957) by documenting his literally extensive contribution to Cumbrian archaeology, upon which I’ve drawn.
