He is struggling with his physical and mental health and finds himself still trying to come to terms with his best friend’s suicide. Then there’s a chance meeting with a local old man in the village pub. This turns into a night of story-telling about one of the most famous airborne assaults in history - the taking of the bridges over the River Orne and the Caen Canal (Pegasus Bridge) in German-occupied France on D-Day. The old soldier talks about landing right next to the bridges at sixteen minutes past midnight on the 6th June 1944, and how they overcame the German garrison and captured the bridges intact. Smith is totally gripped by the old man’s tale and learns how they held the bridges against overwhelming odds until they were relieved in the afternoon by Lord Lovat’s Commandos. The two old warriors discover that they have much in common, and over numerous pints of beer their conversation makes it easier for Smith to begin to put his own ghosts to rest.
