Fishing off harbours or marinasBoats and yachts need shelter from stormy seas so there are hundreds of havens, large and small, around the coast where they are anchored or berthed. These sheltered waters attract fish too. One species in particular, the Grey mullet, fascinates anglers. No wonder. A mullet is a handsome fish which fights hard when hooked. And, it is difficult to catch. How to catch harbour mullet All fish have a weakness. The mullet that live in harbours and marinas like bread! Presumably, they got the habit from finding the lunch remains that fall over the sides of luxury cabin cruisers!Tackle for mulletTo catch a mullet you need a freshwater float rod and reel loaded with 6lb B.S. line, a standard waggler set-up with a size 10 hook baited with a generous piece of bread ‘flake’. Use sliced white bread. Tear off a piece about the size of a pound coin and fold it over the hook and pinch the fold tightly along the hook shank. This should stay in place and hides the hook point in the other ‘flakier’ edge of the bread. Most mullet fishers ground bait sparingly with small nuggets of wet breadcrumbs mixed with a few bits of bread ‘flake’ as free offerings to get the fish feeding. That’s the theory...In practice, not all mullet read the script. They may stubbornly take no interest. It is especially frustrating when you can see the fish disinterestedly swimming around your bait. Fishing can be challenging! If you do hook one you will soon discover that mullet are really strong fighters. Skill is required to handle their initial strong run. You need access to the water’s edge to land one, perhaps via slippery steps down a quayside. Take care!
