Inhaltsangabe

In the eighty or so years of his life, Mohammed Wajed has lived between two continents and three religions. His life has been lived against the background of historical events such as the Partition of India, the creation of Pakistan, and the civil war which led to the emergence of Bangladesh. But he has also experienced cultural and religious changes, such as everyday racism in the UK of the 1960s and 70s, the growth of the Muslim community in Britain, and the evolution of the NHS towards the multicultural institution it has now become. His memoir is full of vivid detail, told honestly and without self-pity, and using diaries which he has kept for the last 60 years. Although the "fall from the top of the tree tree" was a life-shattering experience, Dr Wajed has turned it into a moving, honest and human story.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Mohammed Wajed was born and brought up in 1937 in a small, remote village in rural India. With the help and encouragement of his parents he overcame economic and geographical obstacles to get an education to secondary level and then get a place in medical school in what became first East Pakistan and then Bangladesh. He had set his sights on postgraduate education in the UK and achieved a place in the NHS, rising, in the face of more obstacles, to become a consultant in 1979. He brought up his family in the UK after conflict and corruption in Bangladesh made it difficult to return to his homeland. He has now retired and lives in St Albans.
