The Wrenna is more than a place. The Wrenna echoes with its inhabitants’ voices and history, where Gran brought up her brood who all spread out into the neighbouring streets and raised their own families. The novella’s nameless protagonist guides us through the streets and the years of the estate, telling us stories along the way. We learn how the homes begin to empty and the gangs move in. How the remains of his community – and his own mind – turns cold and dark. Be aware: you will taste, smell and hear the essence of The Wrenna long after you have turned the last page. The Wrenna is a novella made up of interlinking stories set in and around a semi-rural housing estate in the Black Country. A flawed protagonist shows us the streets and wastegrounds of the environment inhabited by generations of his family, while at the same time offering us glimpses into his skewed mind, damaged by war and perhaps a seed that was already present. Gangs have begun to take over the estate. Girls on the estate start to go missing, murders happen; our nameless protagonist imagines them all too clearly while reading reports in the soon-to-be-extinguished local newspaper. And when we find him at the reservoir at the end of the book, we have to wonder, was it all really in his mind?
