Inhaltsangabe

A complete course in arithmetic, taught the way the Russian school taught it: define it, work it, then reason your way through the problems.

K. N. Rashevsky wrote A Short Course in Arithmetic for readers who had finished school and wanted the whole subject back — ordered, connected and worked through, rather than half-remembered.

What the course covers

• The four operations on whole numbers, with the written methods set out in full
• Named and compound quantities — metric measures, older Russian measures, and conversion between them
• Areas and volumes, worked from drawings
• Divisibility, prime numbers, greatest common divisor and least common multiple
• Common and decimal fractions, including repeating decimals
• Ratio, proportion and proportional division
• Percentage, interest and discount; problems on bills and on mixtures
• Plans, diagrams and graphs — including reading a railway timetable off a graph
• A table of prime numbers

Every method is shown at work. The book turns on more than a hundred worked examples and problems, and its long divisions, column multiplications and subtraction tableaux are printed in full, digit under digit, so that the reasoning stands visible on the page instead of being summarised away.

About the author
Konstantin Nikolaevich Rashevsky (1874–1956) graduated from the physics and mathematics faculty of Moscow University in 1899 with a first-class diploma, and spent twenty years teaching in Moscow secondary schools. In 1919 he moved to Ranenburg — today Chaplygin — where he headed the mathematics department of the Institute of Public Education and then taught at the pedagogical technicum for the rest of his working life, a career at the blackboard spanning more than half a century. He wrote a series of school textbooks on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and analytic geometry that were widely used in Soviet classrooms through the 1920s and 1930s.

This is a teacher's book, not a theorist's. It was written by someone who had spent decades watching where students actually go wrong, and it shows in the ordering of the material and in the care taken over each worked step.

Readers who reach the chapter on graphs will meet the mail trains running between Moscow and Ranenburg — the line to the author's own town.

About this edition
A faithful English edition, not a paraphrase. The structure, section numbering, examples, exercises, tables and diagrams follow the 1930 source, and the figures are reproduced from the original plates. Particular care has gone into the vertical arithmetic: the long-division tableaux, the staircases and the ruled columns are typeset to stand as they stand in the Russian original, because in a book of this kind the layout carries part of the argument.

Who it is for
Adults coming back to arithmetic who want the whole subject in one place; homeschooling and classical-education families; teachers and tutors after well-made problems and clean worked methods; and readers interested in how mathematics was taught in the Russian and Soviet school.
