250 multiple-choice questions on Macbeth, with a complete answer key and explanations. Fifty questions for each of the five acts, in the order the play unfolds — revise one act at a time, or test yourself on the whole play.
What's inside
Studying for GCSE English Literature? Macbeth is the most widely set Shakespeare play in England, and these questions are built for the kind of close recall the exam rewards — who says what, where, and why it matters. The questions on the dagger speech, the banquet and the sleepwalking scene go line by line.
Sitting National 5 or Higher? The play is a mainstay of the Scottish courses, and the act-by-act structure lets you work the text in the order your class does.
For teachers and schools. The act divisions make this straightforward to set as homework — fifty questions per act, with the answer key kept separate at the back so a section can be worked without the answers in view. Useful as a starter, an end-of-act check, or revision in the run-up to the exam. Enquiries about class sets are welcome at the address inside the book.
For US students, Macbeth is commonly taught in grade 11 and appears on AP and IB reading lists. For everyone else — theatregoers, book groups, actors preparing a role, or anyone returning to Shakespeare after a long gap — the questions work just as well as a way back into the play.
How to use it: complete an act, then check your answers. Read every explanation, including the ones you got right — that is where most of the learning happens.

Ian Mac publishes The Arts Edge Revision Series, a structured revision and study catalogue covering Shakespeare, nineteenth-century fiction, opera and ballet, with more than thirty titles published since 2026 and the series extending to the full Shakespeare canon. He read English Literature with the History of Art at a Scottish university and has spent over twenty years in the art and antiques trade, dealing in pictures, early English silver and early walnut furniture, which he also restored. He collects antiquarian books: his own shelves hold leaves from the 1577 Holinshed, the chronicle Shakespeare drew on for Macbeth, King Lear and Cymbeline, and a first edition of Dickens's Our Mutual Friend in the original monthly parts. He came to publishing from education, working as a full-time technology trainer from 1990 to 1995 and later as director of new technologies at a London university. He writes and presents Ian Mac: The Arts Edge. His ethos: Time is Knowledge. theartsedge.com
