"Norton on Tees is a sleepy little village in rural England, the residents of which seem to be rather wealthy, yet rather idle. Or are they . . . One of the affable elderly residents, the Honourable Harry Porteous spends most of his time waylaying unsuspecting passers-by with accounts of local history and the like. Well practiced at his craft, Harry corners Andrew Dunbar—a newcomer to the town—and regales him with a far-fetched tale of little substance. Somewhat intrigued, Andrew decides to cash in on the apparent wealth in the community, and opens an employment agency. Nothing is quite as it seems and Andrew is becoming more and more aware of strange occurrences in the village. He discovers that Honourable Harry is the leader of a motley crew of ex-crims, who have retired from their former ‘fields of expertise’ and now pursue perfectly respectable occupations. Thus suitably engaged, the ‘syndicate members’ look forward to their pensions, funded by their contributions to a superannuation scheme, run by the Honourable Harry.’All is going to plan until mysteriously, some of the members experience certain mishaps and inconveniences—like murder.
