If you decide to attend an exercise class with your baby be sure to do some checking ahead of time. Find out what you can about the teacher and the credentials they might have. Do not involve your baby in any exercise program that encourages exercises that jostle or shake babies. Also, beware of classes that are "high pressure" rather than fun. Ask to attend a class before enrolling so you can observe what takes place. Are the babies having fun? Are they frightened or confused? Is there a lot of age-appropriate equipment for your baby to play with? Are babies given plenty of opportunity for free play? Is music an integral part of the program?.....Try to avoid the temptation(created by today's ingenious marketing) of buying your baby "stuff"that will take your place when it comes to playtime. There are wonderful, colorful, imaginative toys, mobiles, videos and games but nothing can ever take the place of time spent interacting with you. Watching your facial expressions change as you sing a silly song, hearing your voice while you read a book, feeling your touch as you wrestle and tumble together--what kind of toy or video can provide this special contact? Remember, nothing is as fascinating to your baby as you are. You are the best "plaything" your baby will ever have.
