The transition from preschool to elementary school can be challenging for children with sensory processing difficulties as they struggle to adapt to new teachers, classrooms, friends, and academic expectations. One way to ensure a smooth changeover for children is by providing organized materials, reviewing routines, and having them meet new staff prior to the first day of school.

Structure and routine are essential for children with sensory processing disorder (SPD) to be successful academically and enjoy their elementary education. This book presents 30 structured sensorimotor theme-based lesson plans along with literacy and curriculum suggestions. The curriculum suggestions provide educators with extension activities that allow them to expand learned concepts using multisensory teaching methods. To create a context for the lesson plans, the book also includes an overview of sensory processing, evidence-based practice options, sensory deficits and children on the autism spectrum, creative suggestions for implementing lesson plans in elementary school environments, information about yoga, S’cool Moves, Speed Stacks, music therapy, sign language, quick fixes for the classroom, and assessment/evaluation tools for collaborative decision making.

The lesson plans follow the same structure and philosophy as those in my first book, Learn to Move, Move to Learn – Sensorimotor Early Childhood Activity Themes (Clark, 2004) for early childhood environments. It is my hope that the timely material in this book will prove valuable to professionals working with elementary school-age children and, ultimately, help improve children’s lives.
