This book presents the story of an American family in the Midwest during the 1920s, '30s, and 40s. Growing up in Ada, Minnesota, Marietta Scherer had three sisters and one brother. Her family lived across the street from her grandparents. The family was prominent, with one grandfather being a state senator and the other an Evangelical pastor serving churches throughout Minnesota. Marietta's own father became the state's first tax commissioner. Because the family owned the local bank, as well as farm land and other holdings, the Spaeths and Hansons remained economically comfortable even during the Great Depression and World War II. Spanning nearly a century, "Mothers' Memories" presents the history of one family through the lives of Marietta's grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (This book is written by Janis Williams as told to her by Marietta Spaeth Scherer)
