AN INTRODUCTION TO DATING SITES
OK, admit it. At one point or another in your life you've thought, "There is no way I will date online. That's for people who can't get dates in real life. I don't have a problem getting dates, therefore I will never, ever in a million years be pathetic enough to sign up for Match.com."
So yeah, about that ... sorry, but eventually, you're going to change your mind. Fact. Whether it's because your curiosity bested you, or you just can't seem to meet the right guy in reality or all of your friends are doing it, you will try online dating at some point in your life (unless you're already married and plan on staying that way, that is).
Although you swore you'd never do it, here you are. Feeling as shameful and guilty as if you were caught watching porn, you log on to Match. com or PlentyofFish.com to see what the fuss is about. Lo and behold, you realize that you kind of like this looking for love malarkey. You discover that online dating isn't just for dateless dorks like you assumed, but it's a lot like shopping for your perfect mate. As Charlie Sheen might say, "Winning!"
There are roughly 54 million singles in America. Of that number, 5.5 million are online dating. It is now the second most common way of meeting people, just behind being set up through friends.
That means that 1 in 5 singles wind up in a committed relationship with someone they met online these days. While we're talking statistics, 1 in 6 singletons actually married someone they met on the Internet – which is 17% of all Americans. Um, whoa.
So dispel that notion that online dating isn't an organic or natural way to meet a potential partner, wise up and get with the program. This is the natural evolution of modern-day dating. It's a new time, a new age and almost everyone uses the Internet. If they don't, they have a valid excuse – like living in a country without electricity or clean water. That said, I have friends living in the rainforest who use solar power to turn on their computers, so really, those of you with easy access to the Internet have absolutely no excuse not to be taking advantage of it.
It's time to think outside the box and stop hating on something you haven't even tried. There are benefits to dating online. For example, if your life is your career, you may not have time to date like a regular human would. You're busy, in demand and either chained to your desk or constantly in and out of boring business meetings. If you live in New York or Los Angeles, you're probably stuck going endless high-profile functions where you'll definitely schmooze, but not in the name of love: there will be nary a straight man in sight. What you're not doing: spending your Wednesday nights at a salsa class, or at a quiet local bar or even in a bowling league. No, you're dreaming about when you'll be able to pass out and go to sleep (preferably by 9 p.m., thanks).
If this sounds horrifyingly familiar, you should be embracing the online dating scene instead of hating on it. If you're strapped for time and know you're attached to your Blackberry/ iPhone anyway, what's the harm in sending a few messages here and there? You won't have to waste your time going on countless dates to find out if you share the same basics values and goals as the other person; you can cut to the chase and weed out the wrong ones right from the beginning.
Online dating is also a great way to meet people you wouldn't have met otherwise. Why limit yourself to meeting through friends, or through your parents, or leaving finding your soulmate up to fate? That only happens in a Katherine Heigl movie, anyway. If you're daunted by the sheer size of sites like Match.com and eHarmony, don't be daunted.
The online dating industry...
