One extended paragraph, the book starts and then doesn't stop until it reaches the end, creating a unique and high-energy reading experience. An extraordinarily artful take on suburbia, with "still-life" sections inspired by the photographs of Laura Letinsky. Dutton is an exceptionally articulate prose stylist (author of books like Margaret: A First Novel) and the narrator here offers highly trenchant observations on suburban culture and domestic relationships. Dutton is a well-connected publisher of literary fiction, the founder of Dorothy, which she began after a tenure at Dalkey Archive Press, as well as a professor at Washington University. This new edition contains an afterword by Renee Gladman, who has recently gained a lot of attention. When SPRAWL originally published, it received strong reviews from a few esteemed outlets and was a finalist for the Believer Book Award but did not, in our opinion, exhaust review possibilities. This edition has good potential for rediscovery.
