While the army’s primary antitank weapons of the late 1930s were 37mm towed anti-tank guns, these were soon deemed to be inadequate against enemy armor. Accordingly, the quest for larger weapons began, as did the desire for a self-propelled antitank gun, or Gun Motor Carriage. Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Commissioned to write his first book in 2003, a 512 page volume on the history of US military vehicles, David Doyle has since published over 100 books. While most of these concern historic military hardware, including aircraft and warships, his volumes on military vehicles, meticulously researched by David and his wife Denise, remain the genre for which he is most recognised. This recognition reached its pinnacle in 2015, when he was presented the coveted Bart Vanderveen Award by the Military Vehicle Preservation Association, given in recognition of the individual who has contributed the most to the historic preservation of military vehicles worldwide.
