ESFERAS is a student and alumni initiative within New York University's Department of Spanish and Portuguese. We are a peer-reviewed publication that publishes critical essays, visual art, creative writing, interviews, translations, and works related to Hispanic and Luso life within and beyond New York City. ESFERAS, "sphere" in both Spanish and Portuguese, is the fusion of compelling images, distinctive voices, and multidisciplinary views. It is the ever-changing shape and infinite flow of our intellectual and creative pursuits. The cornerstone of this issue is the section “Turn to Movement/Giro al Movimiento,” which engages in the theoretical and practical intersections of movement, dance, photography, philosophy, literature, and politics. We feature undergraduate work from the course that inspired this section, “Gestos, movimiento y literatura” (“Gestures, movement, and literature”), taught by Professor Lourdes Dávila. We are honored to include an impressive collection of writings, drawings, and photographs from eminent philosophers, dancers, choreographers, and writers in this field. Many of them labored to contribute new pieces to our journal, and many donated their existing work: our deepest thanks to all of them, for proving and approving the importance of sharing their work with us. In this collective turning, we merge theory and practice, expertise and newfound curiosity, approximating exciting (unanswered) questions on movement, its relationship to the subject or the body and space, and to written text and the archive.
