Nach der Einhaltung der ungewöhnlichen qualifizierenden Papiere (mehrere Seiten mit detaillierten Messungen und Fotografien seines gesamten Körpers) findet sich Beltra bald in der verlassenen Universitätsstadt Lerna wieder, zusammen mit dreiundzwanzig anderen "Anfängern", die alle demselben unbekannten Projekt unterliegen und genau wie Beltra selbst aussehen und klingen.
